Choosing a core for distribution transformers
For distribution transformers up to a few MVA, grain-oriented silicon steel wound cores (toroidal or 3-phase 3D) are the mainstream choice: proven process, good mechanical strength, predictable loss. Amorphous cores cut no-load loss by roughly 60–70% but cost more and are more sensitive to mechanical stress.

FAQ
Are wound cores quieter than stacked cores?
Generally yes — the continuous magnetic path avoids gaps and reduces magnetostriction noise, typically a few dB lower.
